Your home’s equity should not be used as your personal piggy bank. One of the observations that I made as a financial advisor was that the people who were in the best financial shape when they retired had paid off their mortgage. Interest rates are extremely low and if you don’t own a home it’s a great time to buy. Their are still programs available for first time home buyers and you should contact your state’s housing department to learn what is available in your area. This would also be a good time to refinance and or shorten the term of your mortgage. Refinancing your home is a lot more difficult these days but you can also shorten the term of your mortgage by adding more towards the principal payment each month. You will need to get instructions from the mortgage holder if you take this approach. Remember, having a wealthy outlook means acquiring the habit of adding value and owning your home is one strategy you can use to increase your net worth.

About Karen Edwards

Karen Edwards was just a teenager when she developed the philosophy: There is nothing better than a seemingly impossible challenge because, once you find the solution, you realize that personal potential is a limitless asset. Now, decades later, Edwards takes on every challenge thrown her way, and if there isn’t an obstacle to overcome, she finds a way to improve some facet of her business. By living according to her philosophy, Edwards has worked her way to the position of CEO and founder of Milestone Consulting Printing and Design Network (McPadnet), one of the most dominant printing companies on the east coast.

In 1990, Edwards saw a change in the printing industry on the horizon, one that required existing companies to adapt to the changing times to stay in business.

Like all challenges, developing McPadnet required Edwards to take some big risks, including giving up a position at a printing firm and her $100,000 salary to become her own boss. However, the quick-witted entrepreneur saysMcPadnet is the product of a lifetime of preparation, which began with a business management class she took at her West Virginia high school.
