About Cheryl Creuzot

Cheryl Creuzot, President & CEO, Wealth Development Strategies, L.P., is a 30 year veteran, in the wealth management industry, and a published author of many articles on the subject of financial planning. Ms. Creuzot is a resource for print and on-line media, and has been featured in MONEY, Mutual Funds, and Black Enterprise magazines. She previously co-hosted the radio talk show, “Organizing Your Life,” on KRPC. Cheryl is currently working on a financial reality show pilot showcasing a variety of unique investor situations. She’ll be discussing investing wisely, and asset allocation.

A sought after speaker, Ms. Creuzot delivered the key note address for the 2012 Women’s Leadership Academy Summit, the 2010 African American Financial Professionals and the 2008 National Bar Association.  She was the commencement speaker for the 2009 American Intercontinental University. Ms. Creuzot has also addressed Essence Magazine’s Women Who are Shaping the World Leadership Summit, the State of the Black Union, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, the Megafest, the National Conference of Black MBAs and the Junior League of Houston.

About Thomas Shapiro

Professor Thomas Shapiro directs the Institute on Assets and Social Policy and is the Pokross Professor of Law and Social Policy at The Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University.

Professor Shapiro’s primary interest is in racial inequality and public policy. He is a leader in the asset development field with a particular focus on closing the racial wealth gap. The Hidden Cost of Being African American: How Wealth Perpetuates Inequality, published by Oxford University Press, 2004 (soft cover, 2005) was widely reviewed, including by the Washington Post, Boston Globe, and others. The book was named one of the Notable Books of 2004 by The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

With Dr. Melvin Oliver, he wrote the award-winning Black Wealth/ White Wealth, which received the 1997 Distinguished Scholarly Publication Award from the American Sociological Association. This book also won the 1995 C. Wright Mills Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems, and the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights in North America named it an Outstanding Book of 1996.

A Tenth Anniversary Edition of Black Wealth/White Wealth, with two new chapters that examine the most important changes in racial inequality and developments in asset policy in the past decade, was published in 2006.

Great Divides: Readings in Social Inequality in the United States, 3rd edition, was published in the summer of 2004.

His media appearances include Tony Brown’s Journal, The Tavis Smiley Show, Talk of the Nation, CNN, and On Point. His work has been reviewed or discussed in The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The American Prospect, The Chicago Sun-Times, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, CommonWealth Magazine, Newsweek, The Village Voice, and others.

You really can build wealth through home ownership but not if you take out the equity to purchase a car or pay off debt. Your home’s equity should not be used as your personal piggy bank. One of the observations that I made as a financial advisor was that the people who were in the best financial shape when they retired had paid off their mortgage. Interest rates are extremely low and if you don’t own a home it’s a great time to buy. Their are still programs available for first time home buyers and you should contact your state’s housing department to learn what is available in your area. This would also be a good time to refinance and or shorten the term of your mortgage. Refinancing your home is a lot more difficult these days but you can also shorten the term of your mortgage by adding more towards the principal payment each month. You will need to get instructions from the mortgage holder if you take this approach.  Remember, having a wealthy outlook means acquiring the habit of adding value and owning your home is one strategy you can use to increase your net worth.

Kathryn B. Freeland has a work ethic made for an entrepreneur. Even mandatory bed rest while she was pregnant with twins did not stop her from successfully managing her team back at the office. Always the optimist, Freeland learned the ropes of government contracting through personal experience, as both an employee and employer.

As a successful entrepreneur, Freeland has been recognized and honored by numerous national and state organizations. In 1995, she was named the Minority Small Business Person of the Year by the Small Business Administration, and in 1999, Black Enterprise Magazine named RGII as their Emerging Company of the Year. In both 2003 and 2006, she was included on the Maryland Top 100 Women list and, in 2002, received the Baltimore Business Journal “Forty under Forty” award, given to 40 successful entrepreneurs under the age of 40.

Dr.Ellington was appointed to the Morgan faculty as Assistant Professor in 2006 with a specialty in Mathematics Education. Previously, she served as a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics.
